Pet Carriers

If you are a cat owner, you might not put your pet in a cat carrier very often. Every now and then, though, you may have to do so. For example, your cat will need to be secured in a carrier if you take it to the vet. Many cats get very stressed and upset about the idea of being put in a carrier, particularly if they aren’t used to it, but by following a few low stress handling techniques, you can help get your cat used to being put in a carrier.

1. Choose the Right Carrier

First of all, you have to make sure that you choose the right cat carrier. The most important thing is to make sure that it’s the right size. It needs to be large enough that your cat can fit in it comfortably and can easily move around, but it should be small enough that it feels cozy and safe for your cat.

2. Let Your Cat Get Acquainted With it Slowly

Don’t just introduce your cat to the carrier on the day that you’re going to be using it. If possible, try putting it out in a location where your cat can easily see it a few days beforehand. Your cat will probably sniff it and check it out on its own. In fact, you might come home one day to find your cat lying inside of the carrier.

3. Make it Comfortable

You probably wouldn’t want to be put in a plastic box with no padding, and your cat probably doesn’t want to, either. Adding a comfortable blanket or towel can go a long way. You may also want to add a few toys to help pique your cat’s interest and make the carrier more comfortable and familiar.

As you can see, there are a few simple steps that you can follow that can help you get your cat used to being put in a cat carrier. Then, you can make things a lot easier and less stressful for both you and your cat when you need to put your cat in the carrier for any reason, such as for a vet appointment.
